Once a sky pony touched Mother Earth he could not lift himself back to the Sky Nation unless his spirit was released through tobacco or, if he was tasked with bringing a spirit home.

The people would feel a fullness in their bellies that would temper the hard winter. There would be laughter, hard work, and stories of fast buffalo ponies, strong arrows and the four messengers. She listened to the men in their tight uncomfortable clothes, and had listened enough times to know that there would be no meat, no buffalo, no hope. "Beyond their flat voices and waving pens, the sun broke through the heavy sky and cast light onto the face of my Mother. I watched a small herd of buffalo light up and become spirit."
